Free AI Tools for Teachers: 7 Compared
Which free AI tools are worth a teacher's time? Each pick shows what the free plan includes, who qualifies, what costs extra and where the tool falls short, checked on each vendor's own site.
By Dan Fitzpatrick, teacher, AI education specialist and bestselling author. Last updated . 138 tools and 499 educator reviews in the directory.
Short answer: Canva for Education (free for verified K-12 teachers) and Gemini Notebook (a free tier for study guides built from your own sources) are two of the easiest free starts. MagicSchool and Chalkie AI have lasting free plans for lesson planning, Khanmigo is free for teachers, Brisk has a free plan in its Chrome extension, and SchoolAI offers a limited free trial.
How we chose: all seven are listed in the AI Educator Tools directory, are rated by educators on this site and have a free offer that we confirmed on the vendor's own pages on 4 November 2026. Free offers change often, so check the vendor's page before you rely on one. Privacy answers are declared by each company on its listing and are not a legal certification.
Free does not mean safe for pupil data. The Department for Education's guidance on generative AI says schools should be careful with personal data in these tools, so use accounts your school has approved and avoid entering pupil names or sensitive details.
What this guide can and cannot tell you
Use this directory to build a shortlist, not as a compliance decision. Tool details and policies change, and your institution remains responsible for its own legal, safeguarding, procurement and accessibility checks.
- Editorial picks are selected by AI Educator Tools. Star ratings and written reviews are separate contributions from signed-in community members; we moderate submissions but do not claim that every reviewer’s professional identity has been independently verified.
- GDPR, COPPA and FERPA labels report what a vendor declares. A 9ine badge means a separate 9ine assessment has been completed; neither label is a legal guarantee that a tool or a particular deployment is compliant.
- Counts on this page are live counts of public listings and reviews in this directory. They are not estimates of the total number of products, users or reviews in the wider education technology market.
- Paid tiers and featured positions are labelled. Commercial arrangements do not change community ratings, remove critical reviews or determine the editorial picks on this guide.

How to compare free AI tools for teachers
Start with what the free offer really is. Some tools are free for good, some are a trial and some give a fixed number of uses. Then check who qualifies, what the free plan leaves out and whether you stay in control of what pupils see.
- Lasting free or trial: Canva for Education, MagicSchool, Chalkie AI, Khanmigo and Brisk describe ongoing free access. SchoolAI describes a free trial with a yearly limit on launches.
- Who qualifies: Canva for Education needs verified K-12 teacher status, Khanmigo needs an educator aged 18 or over in a listed country, and Gemini Notebook in a school account needs your administrator to enable it.
- Caps that matter: Chalkie AI allows five resources a week, Gemini Notebook allows 100 notebooks, and MagicSchool limits generations on the free plan.
- Teacher in the loop: prefer tools where you review output before pupils see it, and check any pupil-facing feature with your school first.
What the Index says about free AI tools
Free is the norm in this directory. Of the 138 tools listed on 4 November 2026, 19 are free and 77 are freemium, so 96 (70%) can be used without paying. A free plan is usually a way in rather than the whole product, which is why each pick above lists what it leaves out.
Free is not the same as safe for pupil data
On the directory listings, only SchoolAI states FERPA compliance and GDPR in progress among these seven. The other six leave those fields blank, which means not said rather than no. Where a tool has a 9ine assessment listed, you can read it, but it is not a legal certification.
Ask your school's data protection lead before pupils or pupil data go into any free tool, and read the vendor's own privacy documents. The Department for Education's guidance on generative AI is a good starting point for England.
